Yoga is an ancient holistic lifestyle, which includes a system of exercises designed to strengthen and tone the body. Various modern forms of hatha yoga (the asanas, or poses) emphasize different aspects of the physical practice. Iyengar yoga focuses on alignment, while holding static postures. This leads to building strength and deepening stretches while maintaining stillness of the mind. Vinyasa yoga, or flowing poses, tends to emphasize a more aerobic approach, increasing heart rate and respiration, which causes the body to heat up, while focusing the mind to stay in the moment.
Whether you are young or old, athletic or sedentary, thin or heavy, stiff or limber, or even if you've suffered physical trauma, I can modify your practice to fit your needs.
I have been practicing yoga for twelve years. My personal studies have included Bikram, Iyengar, Raja Ashtanga, Kali Ray TriYoga, and yin and restorative yoga, as well as tai chi. My broad understanding of several yoga styles enables me to teach different perspectives on hatha yoga and hopefully open up students to ideas outside their current routines. I feel that a varied approach helps keep students motivated as they go deeper into their practice.
My bodywork training strongly emphasized anatomy and musculoskeletal physiology. This helps me make effective adjustments on yoga students, improving their alignment in postures. I am comfortable with hands-on adjustments, working easily with all types of students.
I am certified as a yoga instructor through the Mount Madonna Center in Watsonville, California, with 200 hours recognized by Yoga Alliance, in Raja Ashtanga yoga.

In general, yoga compresses and releases internal organs, causing them to flush stagnant fluids and then absorb fresh fluids, thereby helping to detoxify the body. Doing yoga also stretches muscles. Muscle tissue is designed to work in one direction only--contraction. A muscle only extends when an antagonist muscle contracts bilaterally, pushing against it. Stretching muscles makes them longer and stronger. A longer muscle can contract farther, effectively creating more strength.

Another benefit of a regular yoga practice can be increased self-esteem, even a sense of elation. This often comes when considering where you started and, after as little as six months, realizing that you're doing poses and twists you never thought your body could accomplish. Such a discovery can be very rewarding, motivating you to continue with your practice.
